“Jobs in the mining and construction industries have continued to expand this month,” said Secretary of Labor John Warner Smith. “Mining was the only industry sector with continued annual job growth since the hurricanes struck last year. Construction has steadily added workers since last December, and more workers are needed.”

Louisiana’s number of unemployed for April was 90,063, up from 89,252 for the previous month. Nationally the unemployment rate of 4.7 percent for April 2006 also showed no change over the month, but was below the year-ago level of 5.1 percent.
